Time and time again we've been asked how to remove the cat urine smell from carpet. Cat urine odor can be quite overwhelming, but it's actually very simple to clean! So don't hurt your bad kitty just yet! You can remove the smell caused by cat urine with just a few simple household chemicals.
You will need:
Paper Towels
White Vinegar
Water
Baking Soda
Hydrogen Peroxide
Liquid Dishwashing Soap (the kind you use in the sink not dishwasher)
Something to scrub the carpet (a brush works well or you can always use your fingers if you have gloves)
A wet/dry Vacuum (this isn't necessary, but will speed up the drying process)
Step 1:
Use the paper towels to remove as much of the cat urine from the carpet as possible. Once the paper towels are no longer able to remove any additional cat urine from the carpet, you're ready to move on to the next step.
Step 2:
Mix a solution of half white vinegar and half water. You probably want to mix around 2 cups, so 1 cup of white vinegar and 1 cup of water mixed should start you off pretty nicely. Pour this mixture directly where the cat urinated on the carpet. Apply this liberally, as the vinegar will neutralize the ammonia in the cat's urine. Let the carpet dry for at least a half hour to an hour. If the carpet is still wet when you are ready to move on to step 3, go ahead and manually dry the carpet with paper towels.
Step 3:
Sprinkle baking soda all over the carpet where the cat urine was located. The baking soda will remove a lot of the smell. Next, take about a half a cup of hydrogen peroxide and mix it with a tablespoon of dishwashing soap. Use this to scrub the carpet with a brush and then let the whole thing dry and you should be free of that horrible cat urine odor!
